A beautiful 18th century coaching inn, left on the verge of dereliction after covid. What followed has been a year and a half restoration project. The interior scheme was designed to be as sympathetic to the original building as possible. Much of the decor is salvage, either from what was in the building originally, or gathered from reclamation yards and fares across the country.
We wanted all the hallmarks of a traditional English pub, the use of vernacular furniture where budget allowed, a warm and inviting colour palette and an unfussy picture scheme. An interior that didn't necessarily feel too done. Yet acknowledging the new start, the renovation and fresh paint, we wanted the decoration to be clean and simple. An interior which had room to evolve over time, space to mature and be added to. It's odd to remark on your own interior as having room for character, but I think that's essential for any new space. It's like knocking in a cricket bat, space needs time. It feels contrived otherwise.
