This impressive frame come from a private collection near Florence. Perhaps originally for a small cabinet picture, the decorative motif is something I hadn't seen before. Research pointed towards a Spanish origin, their decorative schemes often more abstract then the floral designs of Italy. However, the pastiglia technique (gesso built up and modelled before gilding) and punchwork make for a plausible Italian attribution from the 16th century. Frames were often traded and copied across the Mediterranean so it can be difficult to access the exact origins.
